Longtime Nippon Professional Baseball star Tomoyuki Sugano is planning to sign with a Major League Baseball team this off-season. Jeff Passan of ESPN was first to report this news.

After 12 years in the NPB, Tomoyuki Sugano meets the requirements (nine years of NPB service) to qualify for international free agency. Sugano is a right-handed pitcher who just had one of his best seasons in the NPB.

Tomoyuki Sugano is soon going to be 35-years-old. He’s an eight-time NPB All-Star, two-time Central League MVP, and two-time winner of the Eiji Sawamura Award which is given out to the best starting pitcher in the NPB.

Tomoyuki Sugano was posted for MLB teams in 2020. He drew interest from the Giants, Mets, Red Sox, Padres, Blue Jays, and Rangers. However, he did not sign before the deadline. Sugano decided to sign a four-year, $40 million deal with the Yomiuri Giants.

This past season was so dominant for Tomoyuki Sugano. He was on fire the whole season. In 24 starts, he pitched 156.2 innings. Sugano posted a 15-3 record, 1.67 ERA, only six home runs allowed, 111 SO, and a 0.945 WHIP.

It’s going to be interesting to see what team Tomoyuki Sugano decides to sign with. There’s definitely going to be a good amount of teams in on the right-handed pitcher. It will be decided this off-season.
