AL Trade Deadline Recap

The 2023 MLB trade deadline is officially over. Teams have made their final moves to help their October pushes. These American League teams have done their moves.


Justin Verlander - Houston Astros

The New York Mets finished their fire sale by sending Justin Verlander back to the team they signed him from. In return, the Mets received OF Drew Gilbert, their best prospect, as well as OF Ryan Clifford. Verlander is currently pitching to a 3.15 ERA with 81 strikeouts. Heading back to Houston will undoubtedly help their battled pitching staff in their push to keep their dynasty alive.


Jack Flaherty - Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles are without a doubt one of the best stories surrounding baseball. Their rebuild has paid off and they were in a position to make moves at the deadline. Many expected bigger moves, but Flaherty was their choice. In return, the Cardinals received INF César Prieto, left-hander Drew Rom and right-hander Zack Showalter. None of which in MLB's top 100 prospects. Flaherty is currently pitching to a 4.43 ERA along with 106 strikeouts.


Flaherty has not been what he once was with the Red Birds, but the O's are in a position in which they need all the starting pitching help they can get. Flaherty will fit in nicely in their pitching staff.


Luis Urías - Boston Red Sox

In one of the last second trades made at the deadline, the Red Sox acquired Luis Urías from the Brewers. In exchange, minor league right-hander Bradley Blalock. The Red Sox needed help on the offensive side as well as infield depth. Urías fits the profile for them. Urías is having himself a down year, slashing .145/.299/.236 with a home run and 5 RBI. Taking a flyer on Urías could help the Red Sox in a suprising way.


Paul DeJong - Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays added Paul DeJong from the Cardinals in exchange for pitching prospect Matt Svanson. DeJong has spent the last 7 seasons in St. Louis and is experiencing his first change of scenery. With the news of SS Bo Bichette, the Blue Jays adding DeJong was a necessity. Although Bichette will not miss significant time, the injury could be persistent.


DeJong is a low risk - high reward type of player. DeJong is slashing .233/.297/.412 with 13 home runs and 32 RBI this season. His production will translate over to Toronto nicely.


Austin Hedges - Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers acquired catcher Austin Hedges from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for additional capacity in their 2023-24 international signing bonus pool. With the news of Jonah Heim hitting the IL, Hedges will provide that fill in catcher role. Although Hedges is slashing .180/.237/.230 with one home run and 14 RBI, the defense will make up for the time being. The Rangers needed a fill in catcher and got Hedges, who will
