LOS ANGELES, CA: Angels superstar Mike Trout will miss the entire season due to a meniscus injury. Reporters, including Orange County Register reporter Jeff Fletcher, who broke the story on X, were briefed by general manager Perry Minasian today.
Trout had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee at the beginning of May. On July 23, he was able to play for the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees to start his rehab assignment, however he left the game due to left knee pain.
After then, the Angels said he will go back to Southern California for a second opinion. However, it now seems a torn meniscus in his left knee has been found once more, so he won't be able to go back into the Angels lineup in 2024.
In a career that was once characterized by such brilliance but has more lately been defined by injuries, it's just another cruel blow. Trout was widely regarded as baseball's finest player from 2012 until 2020. He hit 297 home runs and drew walks in 15.4% of his plate appearances throughout that time. With a wRC+ of 173, he slashed .306/.421/.587 while stealing 197 bases and playing excellent center field defense.
In that time frame, FanGraphs valued him at 73 wins above replacement, with Max Scherzer trailing far behind with 50.4 fWAR. With 47.1 fWAR, Buster Posey was second among position players.
However, Trout's health has suffered greatly from a number of illnesses since then. A right calf issue kept him from playing in only 36 games in 2021. He increased it to 119 games in 2022, but he continued to miss some time because of back issues. He was limited to 82 games last year due to a left hamate fracture.
Mike Trout has no impact on what the Angels will accomplish this season. Sitting at 47-61, fourth place in the AL West, the club finds themselves on route for another playoff-less season. Trout and the Angels will both look forward to 2025.
