The Houston Astros have released first baseman Jose Abreu. Per, MLB Insider Robert Murray.

Jose Abreu was signed as a free-agent by the Astros in 2022. They gave him a 3-year, $58 million deal. That is an average salary of $19.5 million per year.

As of right now, Jose Abreu is still owed more then $30 million on the deal by the Astros. The Astros and Jose Abreu obviously would’ve never seen this coming. He was such a great player when he was with the White Sox.

Jose Abreu’s now former teammate, Mauricio Dubon of the Astros reacted to the news:

It sucks, man. He’s a big part of the clubhouse. We’re a family here. Thats the thing. It’s a gut punch.

Jose Abreu’s 2024 stats:

35 games | .124/.167/.195, 2 HR, 7 RBI, .362 OPS

There’s no questioning the talent that Jose Abreu has. Although, his struggles with the Astros could mean he’s slowing down as he gets older. He is 37-years-old. There might be a team who will take a flyer on Jose Abreu.
