OAKLAND, CA: Martin Gallegos of MLB.com writes that standout closer Mason Miller of the Athletics is on the 15-day injured list because of a fractured pinkie finger in his left (non-throwing) hand. The A’s will activate RHP Ross Stripling from the 15-day IL, as the corresponding move.
Miller was hurt earlier this week when, according to Gallegos, he punched a padded table in the Athletics' training area out of annoyance.
Throughout the season, Miller has been one of the names that is most frequently speculated about on the trade market. Given that they will have control over the right-hander for five more seasons, the A's chances of trading him were little to none.
Miller was listed as "out of play" on the trade market earlier this week, according to a report by ESPN's Buster Olney. It's unclear if the A's thought the offers wouldn't be adequate or if this injury was the cause (Olney's report was released yesterday, while Miller's injury happened on Monday, according to Gallegos).
In any case, it appears quite probable that Miller will be with the A's after the deadline. Technically, a deal is still feasible, but it was already going to be challenging to agree on how much five years of control would cost. Especially for a pitcher of Miller’s caliber.
Miller was one of the most sought-after players on the trade market due to his complete dominance and immense club control, yet it is important to stress that a deal was by no means certain. If the power-armed 25-year-old makes it through the season on Oakland's roster, trade rumors about him will probably pick back up this offseason. The star closer will not become a free agent until the 2029-2030 offseason.
