Boston Skipper Earns Himself New Contract Extension

BOSTON, MA: The Boston Red Sox and manager Alex Cora have engaged in recent talks on a contract extension, and there is momentum toward a deal, reported Jeff Passan of ESPN earlier yesterday. Just a few hours later, it was confirmed that both sides have agreed to a new contract extension through the 2027 season.

A three-year, $21.75 million contract that will keep Alex Cora in Boston and make him the second-highest-paid manager in the game.

"What this organization means to us is the world... There were two things that I wanted. I want to win and I want security for my family and we have accomplished both."

-Alex Cora

Since Cora, 48, is nearing the end of his current contract, there has been conjecture surrounding him for some time. The team fired chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom after finishing last in the American League East in both 2022 and 2023.

Cora continued after Craig Breslow took over for Bloom, but it was unclear if Cora would stick around for the duration of the current campaign. Cora has publicly stated his interest in moving into a front office position, despite some people's speculation to the contrary.

The franchise has already showed Cora loyalty. He was the team's manager in 2018 and 2019, leading them to the World Series in the first year. However, he was suspended by Major League Baseball in 2020, therefore he was unable to play in that season.

As a result of his involvement in the Astros' controversial sign-stealing scheme, Cora was bench coach for the team in 2017. In Boston that season, Ron Roenicke oversaw the bench, but upon the completion of his sentence, Cora was brought back on a two-year contract that included club options for 2023 and 2024.
