PHOENIX, AZ: The right-hander Paul Sewald has been placed on the 15-day injured list by the Diamondbacks due to neck discomfort, effective from September 12. This announcement was made this afternoon. Catcher Gabriel Moreno was activated from the 10-day injured list in a comparable move.

The announcement is rather surprising, especially considering that Arizona revealed less than two hours before announcing this second round of roster changes that they have designated right-hander Dylan Floro for assignment in order to make room for Blake Walston on the team's active roster.

Sewald, 34, has struggled recently, pitching just once since September 2 and compiling a 7.71 ERA and 4.89 FIP in seven innings since August 19. While the injury may partially account for Sewald's problems on the mound and his prolonged stints without throwing, it's remarkable that the Diamondbacks have kept Sewald on the roster rather than opening up a slot in their bullpen for a new arm.

Due to the back-dated nature of his IL placement, Sewald will be allowed to make a return before the regular season ends, however there is currently no set timeline for his return.
