The Cleveland Guardians announced that right-handed pitcher Triston McKenzie has been optioned to Triple-A Columbus. As a corresponding move, the club reinstated Gavin Williams from the 60-day IL. Williams has been dealing with elbow discomfort that has kept him sidelined this entire year.
Over the past few seasons, Triston McKenzie has solidified himself as a top starter in the Guardians rotation. This season has by far been the worst of his young career.
The year of 2022 was Triston McKenzie’s best of his career. In 31 starts, McKenzie was a workhorse. He put in 191.1 IP, and posted a 2.96 ERA. McKenzie struck out 190 batters. He also posted a 0.95 WHIP.
This season has been a much different story for Triston McKenzie. He’s had the worst luck. In 16 starts, McKenzie has a 3-5 record, 5.11 ERA, 74 SO, and a 1.56 WHIP.
There are times where a player just needs time down in Triple-A for him to get back on track. That could certainly the case with Triston McKenzie. Time will only tell at this point. McKenzie could get a few starts in Triple-A and be lights out. Then, he could be back up in the MLB.
