The eight-player, three-team agreement (which might include up to ten players) announced by the Cardinals, White Sox, and Dodgers is broken down as follows:
The Cardinals receive: cash (from the White Sox) or PTBNL, right-hander Erick Fedde, and outfielder Tommy Pham (both from the White Sox).
Dodgers acquire: Oliver Gonzalez, a right-hander, from the Cardinals; Tommy Edman, an infielder and outfielder, from the Cardinals; and right-hander Michael Kopech, from the White Sox
White Sox receive: cash or PTBNL from Dodgers; minor league infielders Alexander Albertus and Jeral Perez; infielder/outfielder Miguel Vargas.
Two National League contenders stand to gain a lot from this huge trade of senior names in the postseason. With today's trade, the Cardinals—who needed a right-handed bat and rotation support—checked two boxes. Meanwhile, the Dodgers acquired a hard-throwing reliever with an additional season of club control and some much-needed positional versatility to help cover many weak places in the lineup.
All teams are set to make improvements. The Dodgers get their infield depth, the Cardinals get their top of the line starter, and the White Sox get pieces to help in their rebuild. It’s rare that all teams involved are seemingly destined to get better, in this case, the writing is all over the wall.
