Marlins Hire Trailblazer as Director of Player Development

Per Craig Mish of MLB Network the Marlins have hired a trailblazer in the baseball world, Rachael Balkovec as the director of player development. Balkovec has made some noise surrounding baseball as she made history on more than one occasion.

Balkovec, 36, is no stranger to baseball as she has worked in various positions across three different organizations that began in 2012. The term "trailblazer" has been used to define Balkovec as she became the first woman to be a full-time manager for a Major League-affiliated club (Tampa Tarpons, Yankees Class-A affiliate).

For Balkovec, the history did not end there as she also was the first woman to serve as a full-time hitting coach in an MLB organization (Yankees Florida Complex League team) as well as working as a full-time strength and conditioning coach in affiliated baseball.

This move for the Marlins makes all the sense in the world. Balkovec is highly regarded as a great baseball mind, as well as minor league manager, and the Marlins have a strong crop of prospects. On the other side, this is the prime position for Balkovec as she gets to work hand in hand with the Marlins prospects in a much higher capacity than ever before.

For Balkovec, the history might not stop at this either as her name has been tossed around in potential managerial positions for Major League clubs. In just a few years, Balkovec could very well find herself as the first woman to manage a Major League team.
