QUEENS, NY: The Mets are planning to designate for assignment Jorge Lopez after his glove-throwing incident on Wednesday. Lopez said that he did not meet with Mets officials when he talked to reporters after the game. A source said he indeed did meet with both David Stearns and Carlos Mendoza, and the Mets were DFA-ing the reliever, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Reportedly, the Mets considered Lopez’s glove toss into the stands and postgame comments unacceptable. As a result of that, he is gone.
Looking into Lopez’s postgame comments..
"I think I've been on the worst team in probably the whole f**king MLB"
To give context on Lopez’s incident on the field, he was ejected by the 3rd base umpire and as result, his frustration boiled over and the veteran reliever threw his glove into the crowd.
Lopez is a 9-year veteran who has spent time with multiple clubs, most notably his four years in Baltimore. His 2024 has been solid in Queens, as the 31-year old has pitched to a 3.12 ERA across 26.0 innings pitched.
After Lopez’s incident and post game comments, the veteran could find some trouble latching on to a new home. However, his 2024 has shown promise, unlike the rest of his former club’s bullpen, which could land him his seventh club of his nine year career.
