Baltimore Orioles infielder Jordan Westburg was removed from yesterday’s game after being hit by a pitch in the hand. After the game, it was confirmed that he has a fractured hand. This is awful news for the young infielder who was having a really nice season.
Manager Brandon Hyde was asked how big of a loss Jordan Westburg is. His response was:
“He is a huge part of our lineup, our culture, really everything.”
That’s very true. Jordan Westburg brings energy and is a good leader for the Orioles. This is a huge blow to the Orioles lineup and their clubhouse. Westburg made his MLB debut last season but this year is his first full year at the major league level.
Jordan Westburg was an All-Star this year for the first time in his career. That just shows how well he’s been playing all year. In 101 games, Westburg has slashed .269/.317/.497, with 18 HR, 58 RBI, and a .814 OPS.
The Orioles have plenty of young stars. Jordan Westburg is included in that. The hope is that he can return before the end of this year. The Orioles are almost a lock to make the playoffs, so Westburg should be back it unless something goes wrong like a setback in his rehab.
