The Philadelphia Phillies have extended manager Rob Thomson through the 2026 season. The Phillies are also bringing back their entire coaching staff for the 2025 season. There will be no coaches fired for the Phillies in back-to-back seasons.
Dave Dombrowski and Rob Thomson held a press conference yesterday. They have one every year after their season is over. There was a lot to take in that Rob Thomson said that is notable.
Here are some things he said:
"The standard now is to win world championships."
"This is the only place I want to be."
“I am also very happy that our entire coaching staff is coming back. Many managers will say it, but I truly believe that we have the best coaching staff in baseball.”
This is the second contract extension that Rob Thomson has gotten with the Phillies since taking over as the full time manager. His first one ran through the 2025 season. Now, Thomson will have one that runs through the 2026 season.
Rob Thomson took over as the Phillies manager in 2022. That same year, he took them to the World Series and came up short. In 2023, the Phillies made it to the National League Championship Series and fell to the Diamondbacks in 7 games. Just this past season, the Phillies made it to the National League Division Series and lost to the Mets in 4 games.
There’s no question that Rob Thomson is a great manager. He just hasn’t been able to win a championship with the Phillies as the manager after he and the Phillies have came close to it. There’s a good chance by 2026 Rob Thomson could have a championship with the Phillies.
