For all teams around the league their first series of the 2025 season has wrapped up. There were lots of sweeps and series wins. For the Pirates, they were a team that lost their series. It wasn’t just a series loss though, it was a unique kind of series loss. They lost the series to the Marlins, and it was certainly a series to forget for the Pirates.

The reason the first Pirates series of the year was so bad because not only did they lose the series against the Marlins, they are the first team to be walked off for their first three losses in a season since the 1924 Pirates. Per, Elias Sports Bureau.

That is exactly 101 years ago. The thing that makes it worse for the Pirates, is the last team to do it was also the Pirates. When talking about this kind of stat, it’s certainly not a good one for the Pirates organization.

This is a Pirates team that came into the season expecting big things early in the year. Especially when you are facing a team who wasn’t very good last year in the Miami Marlins. There’s no question that the Pirates can bounce back with all their young talent, but this certainly isn’t something that they expected in the first few losses of the year.
