Pirates Part Ways With Veteran Starter

PITTSBURGH, PA: Joey Wentz, a left-hander, was added to the active roster by the Pirates, who claimed him off waivers earlier this week. The matching move has been assigned to right-hander Domingo Germán. Robert Murray of FanSided reported on X that Germán will be assigned before the official announcement. Wentz was in the clubhouse while Germán was departing in street clothes, according to information relayed on X earlier in the day by Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The most of this year, 32-year-old Germán has been with Triple-A Indianapolis. In the off-season, he inked a minor league contract with the Bucs. He promptly resigned a new minor league contract after choosing to opt out of the previous one in July. He made 13 starts with that club, although his 5.29 earned run average was not very impressive. He gave walks at a rate of 10.3% and struck out 21.9% of hitters he faced.

Just about a month ago, the Pirates added him to their major league roster, where he has been utilized in a pinch-hitting capacity. His seven appearances, two of which were starts, have yielded a 7.84 ERA, an 18% strikeout rate, and a 13% walk rate.

In the upcoming days, Germán will be placed on waivers. It appears reasonable to anticipate that he will go unclaimed considering that he has recently been forced to settle for lower league contracts and hasn't performed well when given the chance. He may find himself back on the open market soon because he has more than enough service time to decline an assignment outright and choose free agency.

Throughout his career, he has had both positive and negative outcomes. In June of last year, he pitched the 24th perfect game in MLB history. In September 2019, while still a member of the Yankees, he was placed on administrative leave and then suspended for 81 games due to domestic abuse. Prior to that flawless game last year, he was suspended for using foreign substances. After a reported altercation in which he yelled with people in the Yankee clubhouse before flipping a couch, he eventually ended the year on the restricted list while receiving treatment for alcohol abuse.
