The 2024 MLB regular season awards have began to be announced. This whole week will be filled with players being crowned an award. Up first was Rookie of the Year. Pirates right-handed-pitcher Paul Skenes is the National League Rookie of the Year.
Paul Skenes captured 23 out of 30 first-place votes. Padres OF Jackson Merrill received 7 first place votes, he finished second. The other nominee was Brewers OF Jackson Chourio who finished third and received all of the third place votes.
All in his first year in the major leagues this is what Paul Skenes achieved:
. First overall pick
. All-Star game starter
. NL Rookie of the Year
. NL Cy Young finalist
. All-MLB first team
Paul Skenes was dominant as soon as he touched the mound in his first game in the MLB. He really put the league on notice. In 23 starts, Skenes pitched 133.0 IP, 11-3 record, 1.96 ERA, 170 SO, and a 0.95 WHIP.
If Paul Skenes did make just a few more starts, he would have a really good shot at also winning the NL Cy Young. Either way it was a tremendous first year in the majors for Skenes and is certainly one to remember for a while for everyone.
