CINCINNATI, OH: It's improbable that Matt McLain will return to action in 2024. After having shoulder surgery in March, the Reds infielder has been sidelined for the entire season.

He had originally planned to return sometime in August, but a stress reaction to his rib cage that occurred approximately six weeks ago proved to be a significant obstacle to his recovery. Nevertheless, the Reds had been hoping he would return before the year ended until lately.

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer was among the media persons who manager David Bell informed last week that McLain was "pain-free" and returning to "baseball activities."But Bell acknowledged today that it is unrealistic to anticipate McLain to return this season, telling reporters.

In 89 games last season, McLain, 25, hit .290/.357/.507 with 23 doubles, 16 home runs, and 14 stolen bases. He finished seventh in the NL Rookie of the Year voting. In addition, he divided his time between second base and shortstop, putting up four DRS and two OAA.

McLain concluded with 3.1 FanGraphs WAR in just over half of a season's worth of games, looking like a genuine five-tool talent. In 2025, maybe, Cincinnati will be able to witness what he can accomplish for a complete season.

The Reds had a wealth of young, promising hitters when the 2024 season began, but for various reasons, several of those players have underperformed this year.
