BOSTON, MA: The Detroit Tigers announced after yesterday’s 8-4 win against the Red Sox that they have optioned 1B Spencer Torkelson to AAA Toledo. Evan Petzold of Detroit Free Press was first to report.
Torkelson, 24, was the first overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. Torkelson has impressed in the past and made his MLB debut in April of 2022.
Torkelson’s best season came last year when he slashed .233/.313/.446 with 31 home runs. 2024 has been a totally different experience. The youngster is slashing .201/.266/.330 with just 4 home runs.
The Tigers went into 2024 with some bigger expectations than they are used to as the AL Central was wide open. It’s been a different story as the Tigers now find themselves in fourth place with a record of 29-30, 10.0 games back of first.
Torkelson has plenty of time to turn his season and career around. Although unimpressive thus far, there’s no question in the talent that Torkelson possesses. The hope is with a trip down to Toledo, Torkelson will be back in Detroit in no time.
