MINNEAPOLIS, MN: According to a club statement, the Twins have signed veteran right-hander Giovanny Gallegos to a minor league contract. Triple-A is the new home for Gallegos.
The seasoned right-hander, who turns 33 next week, started his major league career in 2017 with the Yankees. Prior to being traded to the Cardinals midway through the 2018 season in exchange for Luke Voit, who was transferred to the Bronx, Gallegos made just 20 games with New York.
In his two appearances in St. Louis during the last stretch, Gallegos pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. However, the following season, he became an indispensable member of the Cardinals bullpen.
Gallegos pitched to a stellar 2.84 ERA and virtually identical 2.83 FIP from 2019 to 2022. In 228 1/3 innings thrown, he recorded 33 saves and an astounding 32% strikeout percentage. During that four-year span, Gallegos became one of the most dominant relievers in the game.
The right-hander's FIP and ERA were both seventh among relievers with at least 150 innings of work during that time, while his strikeout rate was eleventh and his SIERA was tenth. Even though such figures were great, the right-hander's 31st season of the previous season saw a decline in performance.
Gallegos's 2022 ERA and FIP skyrocketed to 4.42 and 4.36, respectively, which were in fact somewhat below average by ERA- and FIP-metrics.
Gallegos’s 2023 was cut short with rotator cuff tendinitis and once 2024 rolled around, the Red Birds hoped for better results. Gallegos would go on to have one of the worst stretches of his career, pitching to a 6.53 ERA across just under 21.0 innings. The righty will now look to get things back under control and make his way to the Twin Cities.
