NEW YORK, NY: Since being released by the Guardians at the end of August of last year, Noah Syndergaard has not pitched in a professional capacity. Over the offseason, he allegedly caught the attention of the Padres and Pirates but went unsigned. After almost half of the '24 campaign ended, Syndergaard appears to be focusing on the next year.
According to a tweet from Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the former star of the Mets will try to return in 2025. In the upcoming offseason, he'll probably have a couple showcases in the hopes of landing a minor league contract and receiving a non-roster invitation to Spring Training.
At his best, Syndergaard was one of the most formidable starters in the game. Since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020, his triple digit velocity has not been restored. Despite his reduced stuff, Syndergaard overcame it to record a respectable 3.94 ERA in 134 2/3 innings pitched against the Phillies in 2022.
Last season, he struggled with the Dodgers and the Guardians, and things went south. With Los Angeles, Syndergaard recorded a 7.16 earned run average in 12 starts. After a few months on the injured list, he was traded to Cleveland in exchange for Amed Rosario, who was sent to LA.
After coming off the injured list, Syndergaard entered the Cleveland rotation for the month of August. There wasn't much of a turnaround in the new environment. Before being released, he made six starts for the Guardians and gave up a 5.40 ERA. Syndergaard finished the season with an ERA of 6.50 over 88 2/3 innings pitched.
