SAN FRANCISCO, CA: Matt Chapman is among the best hitters who will become free agents in the upcoming season for the second year in a row. It is almost a given that he will opt out of the remaining two years and $36MM of his contract with the Giants, barring any major injuries in the coming weeks.
A few weeks ago, Jon Heyman of the New York Post revealed that San Francisco hoped to sign the talented third baseman to a new multi-year contract. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle was informed by Agent Scott Boras that the parties have had some discussions, and he verified as much.
In a same vein, Farhan Zaidi, president of baseball operations, informed Slusser that talks on a long-term agreement have been "actively dialogued" and "had conversations."
Chapman is having a bounce back year in the Bay Area, flipping his stats from his 2023 season in Toronto. The veteran infielder is slashing the bat at a .245/.335/.442 rate, all while blasting a whopping 20 homers for the Giants.
San Francisco has lost out on multiple opportunities to sign big name players such as Aaron Judge, Bryce Harper, and Manny Machado. Keeping Chapman at the hot corner in the Bay Area is almost a given for the franchise. Chapman has expressed his interest in an extension with the Giants.
