White Sox Slugger to Begin Rehab Assignment

CHICAGO, IL: Eloy Jiménez, a designated hitter/outfielder, has been sent to the Arizona Complex League White Sox for an injury rehab assignment, the White Sox announced today.

If there isn't a health setback, non-pitchers' rehab assignments can last up to 20 days before they have to be added back to the injured list.

About three weeks ago, 27-year-old Jiménez sustained an injury to his left hamstring. At the time, manager Pedro Grifol stated without providing a specific date that Jiménez would be absent for a "extended period of time."

It appears that he is now prepared to resume playing and, barring an injury, rejoin the major league team by the start of July, if not earlier.

Jiménez is a clear contender to be traded before the trade deadline, therefore the timetable is noteworthy. After dealing away talents like Dylan Cease, Lucas Giolito, Lance Lynn, Aaron Bummer, Robbie Grossman, Reynaldo López, Jake Burger, and others in the previous year, the White Sox are in the midst of a major rebuild.

They are far and away the poorest team in the majors with a miserable 17-52 record this season. Jiménez signed a six-year, $43MM extension with the Sox in 2018, and he is currently in the final season of that deal.

In addition to his $13 million salary this year, he has two club options. The price for the following year is $16.5MM, with a $18.5MM option for 2026 and a $3MM buyout for each.

He has demonstrated throughout that contract that he is capable of being a serious danger in the starting lineup, but injury has frequently prevented him from living up to that potential. With a wRC+ of 116 and a career slash line of .271/.321/.479, he has outperformed the league average overall by 16%.
