CHICAGO, IL: According to Scott Merkin of MLB.com, White Sox right-hander Drew Thorpe will have season-ending surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow.
Merkin continues, according to the club announcement, Thorpe—who has spent the last month on the injured list because of a flexor strain—should be fully recovered in time for Spring Training.
It's the most recent bad news in a terrible season for White Sox supporters. A month from now, Thorpe will turn 24 years old. During the offseason, he was involved in two huge blockbuster deals that garnered widespread attention.
First, as part of the deal that sent Juan Soto to the Bronx, the Yankees gave the Padres their second-round pick in the 2022 draft.Thorpe was sent to Chicago to bring right-hander Dylan Cease to San Diego, and three months later, he was in the news again.
Thorpe's reputation as a top-100 prospect and his recent stellar 2023 season with the Yankees—during which he had a 1.48 ERA in his first taste of Double-A action—created a lot of buzz and helped him figure into two of the major transactions of the previous winter.
Although Thorpe is now anticipated to be fit for action in time for Spring Training, the young player's impending surgery may indicate that South Side fans should anticipate a healthier, more productive Thorpe in 2025. The Sox anticipate depending on a late-inning lineup that includes Davis Martin, Nick Nastrini, Chris Flexen, Jonathan Cannon, and Garrett Crochet.
