BRONX, NY: The Yankees declared that right-hander Cody Poteet has been optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following his reinstatement from the 60-day disabled list. Ron Marinaccio, a fellow righty, has been designated for assignment to clear a space on the 40-man roster.

Poteet's right triceps strain put him on the 15-day injured list in June; he was subsequently moved to the 60-day IL. He was placed back on the roster because he had begun a rehab assignment on August 20 and was approaching the 30-day maximum for that assignment. For the foreseeable future, he'll give the Yankees some extra depth in the rotation, but it's unlikely that they'll need it.

29-year-old Marinaccio made a great debut in 2022. That season, he pitched 44 innings for the Yankees, giving up 2.05 earned runs per nine. Although his walk rate of 13.3% was a little high, he made up for it with a strikeout rate of 30.9%.

His performance has somewhat decreased after then. In 47 1/3 innings the previous season, he had an ERA of 3.99. While his walk rate of 13.2% was nearly identical to that of the previous season, his strikeout rate decreased to 27.3%. He has been traded back and forth between the Yankees and the Triple-A RailRiders a lot here in 2024.

He has a 3.86 ERA in 23 1/3 big league innings. He decreased his walk rate to 10.1%, but he also experienced a dip in strikeouts to 25.3%. For Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he had a 2.04 ERA, a 25.8% strikeout rate, and an 8.8% walk rate in 39 2/3 innings.

The righty is in his final option year and has already been sent down five times this season, so the Yanks weren't going to have the same roster flexibility with him moving forward, despite some encouraging performances in there.
