Yankees Place ROY Candidate on IL

BRONX, NY: Right-hander Luis Gil of the Yankees was placed on the 15-day injured list today due to a lower back strain, the team said today. In tandem, fellow right Will Warren was brought up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Gil began the game against the Guardians Friday night, but he was pulled after just three innings and 78 pitches. Later on, the team disclosed that he left due to discomfort in his lower back, as reported by Chris Kirschner of The Athletic on X.

Although the club hasn't given any updates today regarding Gil's expected absence, it appears that, given this IL placement, they anticipate him missing at least a few weeks.

That will ruin the right-hander's fantastic rookie campaign, in which he has made 24 starts and has a 3.39 earned run average.Although his walk rate of 12.6% is a little high, he has a solid strikeout rate of 27.5% to offset it.

Gil could have required a break at some time anyhow, as his workload is already pushing him into unfamiliar territory. He missed the majority of that season and 2023 due to Tommy John surgery that he had in May of 2022. His career high for innings pitched, both in the majors and minors, was 108 2/3 in 2021.

He has already recorded 124 2/3 frames as of 2024. That indicates that, following two largely unsuccessful seasons, he is well into personal-high territory. Despite his impressive performance, the Yankees might have felt pressured to consider reducing his workload in some way, perhaps by optioning him to the minor leagues or moving him to the bullpen.
