READING, PA: The New York Yankees third baseman, DJ LeMahieu, started a rehab assignment in AA Somerset today. The 35-year old was expected to play five innings in today’s game against the Reading Fightins. He took one AB that ended in a strikeout.
After exiting after just one inning, the Yankees announced that the third baseman exited with soreness in his right foot. Bryan Hoch of MLB.com announced that LeMahieu will return to New York tomorrow for further examination.
LeMahieu’s rehab assignment will obviously be prolonged with the unfortunate news. LeMahieu was slated to have a possible return in the upcoming series against the Baltimore Orioles.
LeMahieu, 35, signed a six-year, $90 million extension with the Yankees after his outstanding 2019 season. LeMahieu is obviously on the wrong side of his career age-wise and has dealt with a slew of injuries recently. LeMahieu has yet to make his 2024 debut and it looks all but guaranteed it will be a while for the third baseman.
